There are a few workshops that will show you the entire process, from start to finish and you can even bring one back as a souvenir! But if you’re after something more precious, Karaikkudi Antiques Market has EVERYTHING you can think of - from books to ACTUAL doors of homes with such intricate craftsmenship that it breaks your heart to see them for sale. Even cookery pots and pans that were made in the Netherlands centuries ago, that they’re printed “Made in Holland” are there. I picked up sarees for my mum and me at Mahalakshmi Handloom Weaving Centre - you can see the actual saree weaving process here alas, they just happened not to have demonstrations on the day we went. The Chettinad vintage car and camera museum is a testament to how far one’s passion can go. As made clear by the name, the museum features authentic vintage cars, motorbikes, cameras, clocks and paraphernalia such as lighters, all restored to working condition by one person who considers this his hobby. I would say this is a must-see because I’m sure you know of such vintage items but to actually see them right in front of you, and the breadth you can learn from the guide within the short span you’re there is pretty much what life is about if you ask me. The trip was the cheapest way to access these places (with tickets included) so if you’re considering traveling out, you can consider this! Only thing is, you get an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes at best at each spot and that can feel like you’re on a schedule. We were given an hour and with that time, there was just enough to catch the alpaca feeding show at 10am and have a look at the alpaca enclosure. The place is steep so keep this in mind! Garden of Morning Calm is what my retirement dreams are made of. I was desperately wishing I lived near this place so I could take my books out there on Sundays to sit on a bench and read. If you ask me, it combined the best of Seoul Forest and Changgyeonggung Palace. I stopped by the infamous Gwangjang Market too, but as a vegetarian, you guys, I did not have the stomach for this place. I did NOT go in with the right understanding of what the market is about. I did buy gochugaru from a store though! Am I on a mission to try every type of chilli from every country? Well, I am now. Also checked out Myeong-dong as it’s popularly referenced but again, it’s just not a personal vibe. Needing more cruciferous vegetables than the average person for better toxin function was a bit of a surprise but I’m also not complaining. I love cruciferous vegetables and actively stop myself from eating too much of them so I can eat other vegetables too because you know “have a colourful plate of fruits and veggies” and “eat 2 vegetables and 2 fruits a day” and “have 5 a day”. How did Hiro and Jack come about? I had a difficult experience trying to source affordable soft soled shoes for my son while he was learning to walk. Most of them were made in the UK and US, and I wasn't keen on paying that much of shipping costs. When I successfully made the prototype and saw that my son loved it, I felt that perhaps I could start advocating for soft soled shoes in Singapore and be the solution for other parents who were facing the same shoe shopping issues as us. I was also hoping this could tide us through some months while my husband secured a new job elsewhere. We never did think we would end up doing this permanently. Hiro and Jack are actually the names of my guinea pigs. My husband's friend gave us his father-son guinea pig duo after he had a 2 new litters. They were my first babies (before my own kids!) and I wanted to do something to have them remembered for a long time. Hiro (the dad) has outlived the average pig lifespan and will be 9 this October. Jack (the son) passed on back in 2016 at age 3.5 due to respiratory issues. I didn't put much thought into the name of the business though. How do you draw boundaries to juggle being a good businesswoman, a mother, and a wife? It is hard! I must admit I still don't have it altogether. I do try to keep certain times of the day strictly for family or work. Evenings and dinner time is family time. There are days I spend extra time on working on my orders and I miss out on play or bedtime stories with the kids. Mom-guilt does creep in, but I try to make up for it on other days. I'm thankful my kids understand. Homeschooling and all other duties of the home are shared between my husband and I. Our teamwork is critical in keeping all 4 of us sane! This is a very interesting time to be Indian in Singapore - what has it been like to be in a biracial marriage, and raising biracial children? Earlier this year, my son would tell others that he was English, because he spoke English and nothing else. He couldn't identify himself as Chinese, Indian or a mixture because he didn't speak Cantonese, Mandarin or Tamil like his extended family members. While we fully understand his struggles, we have been trying to help him understand his heritage. We do frequently get curiously stared at on our trips out on public transport or at restaurants (also because our toddler loves to say hi to everyone) and there were even times when random strangers would make detours to simply get a peek into the pram to see how a mixed race baby would look like. My husband and I have Christian, western and liberal ideas of raising our children so there has been no cultural conflicts whatsoever. I must add that my husband has certainly experienced first-hand some level of prejudice. I would like to be known as someone who dares to dream, and someone who dreams alongside you. I think having a dream in life is important. Having a dream gives you a direction in life, it makes every day meaningful and inevitably pushes you out of your comfort zone. Because dreams are not easily attainable, right? As you achieve more things out of your comfort zone, that's when growth happens and you will be amazed at yourself! Too many kids and adults I come across these days live life with zero motivation and it eats into every area of their lives. I used to be one of them because everyone was so judgemental about my dreams for myself. My son taught me to dream again. He learnt to kick a ball before he could walk. He would beg us to hold his body up (at 10 months old) just so he could kick! He's turning 5 now and he dreams of becoming a professional football player. He would spend hours practicing goals and writing lists of player names and clubs. This blows me away and yet, if we need to, I would readily move to another continent to make his dream come true. Has this been the case for you and how have you navigated that? I’ve prioritised motherhood over all things since having Noah, but not because it was expected. I’ve not had much choice as I don’t have a support network (like my parents) here in Sydney and Vick’s work often takes him out of the country. So all things take a back burner when they need to. I’ve also been very lucky to have Vick support me from the beginning even when everyone thought I was just going through a hobby phase. Since becoming parents, we both have worked together to make it work. It was very clear from the post that you have a very strong work ethic and that's the quality I admire most about people. Can you tell us what are the things you do as a photographer to upgrade yourself? And if you don't mind, some of your aspirations? I constantly try to work on my techniques and attend a workshop here and there but the most important thing for me is to consistently shoot and practice. I believe that if you do something you love on a regular basis, you will get better with time. I am very self-critical, so my aspiration would be to be 100% satisfied with my work; to find my own voice in my pictures and for people to recognize it when they see my work. But the most important thing for me is to make people happy with my pictures, especially to get that big smile on their face when they see their pictures for the very first time. What has been your favourite piece of work so far and why? That’s a tough question! I think it’s the pictures I took of Vithya in Zandvoort Beach, Amsterdam because I always wanted to take pictures of her. This was a spontaneous shoot with no preparation, and the pictures came out so pure and raw. Why do you think that is? We like to show what we are doing and food, having a meal, is a big part of our life. So maybe that's the reason. I used to do it myself, I wanted to show the fancy, delicious meals I ate and somehow everybody was doing it, so why not me? I now only do it when I want to recommend a really cool eating place or when I made a nice cake or something, but I don't see the point in sharing my everyday meal anymore. And since we are talking about social media, how much has Instagram influenced your work and your life since it's mainly a photo sharing app? A lot! I got to know my best friend via Instagram, as well as many other beautiful people who inspire me (like you and Vithya) from all around the world and I discovered loads of talented photographers through the app. As I mentioned, I am totally addicted to Instagram and it’s the only place where I share my work, so it's kind of important to me. What is something you wish people would ask more to better understand you or your craft? Sometimes people assume that as a photographer you can take perfect pictures of anything and with any equipment, but it depends on so many aspects and every photographer has his /her own style and is specialized in something. I, for example, love to take pictures in available light (daylight) but I struggle with artificial lighting. What advice would you pass on to someone who's trying to figure out or follow their passion? Especially if it's in photography? I would say they should just go for it and shoot, shoot, shoot. Finding someone who can give you advice and push you further is also very helpful. Do what you enjoy and not what others do or what is trendy, unless if that’s what you like.
